Deadline date

After waiting a lengthy time for the artist Corinne, to e-mail us the track we recieved an e-mail with the mp3 attatched on the 03.12.09. For the past few lessons we have used the video camera to record footage which we then decided wasn't appropriate and didn't look professional enough. To resolve this we sat and discussed between one another a different idea which we think will be really effective and unique.

Subject: permission to use music

Hi Corinne,
we are currently in our second year of college studying media and our task for this year is to create a music video. After listening to your tracks on www.unsigned.com we found a track we really like called Therapy. We thought that the track would be suitable to use for our project. We were wondering if you would grant us the permission to use one of your songs as part of our project to soundtrack over our video, we would greatly appreciate if you would allow this.

Thank You

Jessica and Jennifer

Problems and Issues Encountered

After a long wait for a reply from a message to the artists music we wanted to use, we still didn't recieve a formal written reply from the artist via myspace. We then tried to contact the artist via the record label RCA Records but after numerous attempts through hotmail the e-mail failed to deliver. Due to time being valuable and having deadlines to meet, we thought that researching other unsigned artists would be appropriate. After browsing for unsigned artists on www.unsigned.com , we came across an artist called Corinne Vielle. Her music genre was r&b and we thought that using creative mise-en-scene such as costume and make up along with location would be good to use for the track which we liked. We contacted Corinne via e-mail, using the address provided on her website, within 12 hours we recieved a positive reply permitting us to use her track. I will later upload the e-mail which we recieved.

Permission for usage of track

RCA RECORDS,
A few months ago we contacted one of your artists: Kesha. At this point the artist was still unsigned and we found her music on www.purevolume.com. We asked if it would be possible to use one of her records, Tik Tok, for our A level media project. We later received a reply from the artist confirming with "rad that'd be dope" which we assumed from looking at her myspace page was a positive response.
Due to the song being currently broadcast on the radio, we wondered if this was still possible and if we would need further written permission from your label before we could use the track. We would greatly appreciate if you as a record label could contact us with an answer as the track may not be permitted for use. We would appreciate if you could contact us as soon as possible as we have deadlines to meet for our project.

Many Thanks
Jessica and Jennifer

STORYBOARD

Recently we discovered that the artist that we had chosen had successfully released her song into the UK charts, we believed that although we had recieved an email via my space from the artist we believed that using the track without permission from the record label would mean that we were using copyrighted music which is illegal. Due to this we e-mailed RCA Records (sony).

lesson 06.10.09

Today we started creating our storyboard which we annotated describing the types of shots we are going to use. We needed a female to star in our video as the main artist and were unable to find someone who was willing to. In our group Jennifer volunteered to do this for our video which then resolved our problem.

lesson 05.10.09

Yesterday we were using youtube to look for ideas for costume and shots in our own video.
We looked at a range of videos from lady gaga for ideas for costume and use of narrative then cheryl cole for costumes and lip sync. We also added ideas to our pitch of what we were going to include in out video and how we are going to construct it.

PITCH - IDEAS

Pitch

Name of artist: Kesha Sebert

Song Title: TIK TOK

Genre: POP/ELECTRO

Target Audience: The target audience for this genre is a younger audience as the lyrics reflect that of the younger generation. The artist is very fashionable and stylish which may also reflect the audience. The artist is younger herself and has a modern rock chic attitude.

What kind of video will we create?

The video will reflect that of the narrative in the song for example “before I leave brush my teeth”, the star of the video will demonstrate this.

We are going to use a range of different outfits/costume to reflect the narrative.

We are going to use a range of backgrounds using green screen which will be created using the new equipment located in the new studio at college.

The editing will be fast pace as the music is itself. We will make good use of lip sync and try to use as much as possible and needed. We will use a range of different objects as they will reflect the lyrics and will demonstrate the narrative.

KESHA TIK TOK LYRICS

Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy

(Hey, what up girl?)

Put my glasses on, I’m out the door – I’m gonna hit this city

(Let’s go)

Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack

Cause when I leave for the night, I ain’t coming back

I’m talking – pedicure on our toes, toes

Trying on all our clothes, clothes

Boys blowing up our phones, phones

Drop-topping, playing our favourite CDs

Pulling up to the parties

Trying to get a little bit tipsy

[CHORUS]

Don’t stop, make it pop

DJ, blow my speakers up

Tonight, I’mma fight

‘Til we see the sunlight

Tick tock, on the click

But the party don’t stop

Woah-oh oh oh

Woah- oh oh oh

Ain’t got a care in the world, but got plenty of beer

Ain’t got no money in the pocket, but I’m already here

Now, the dudes are lining up cause they hear we got swagger

But we kick ‘em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger

I’m talking about – everybody getting crunk, crunk

Boys trying to touch my junk, junk

Gonna smack him if he getting too drunk, drunk

Now, now – we goin’ til they kick us out, out

Or the police shut us down, down

Police shut us down, down

Po-po shut us – [CHORUS] x2

DJ, you build me up

You break me down

My heart, it pounds

Yeah, you got me

With my hands up

You got me now

You gotta that sound

Yea, you got me

DJ, you build me up

You break me down

My heart, it pounds

Yeah, you got me

With my hands up

Get your hands up

Put your hands up

No, the party don’t stop until I walk in

[CHORUS] x2

Song choice

After tediously searching numerous websites for unsigned artists/bands we luckily found a solo artist whose genre of music reflected that of which want to use for our project. http://www.purevolume.com/, allowed us to preview only one track but we wanted to hear more, we then decided to visit her myspace page which allowed us to access more of her songs. After listening to them, we found one in particular which we thought would be good to use for our media project to make a music video. Due to copyright and legal requirements we had to e-mail the artist to ask if she would allow us to use her song. In the next lesson we had recieved a reply from Kesha which said "rad!, that'd be dope", we were unfamiliar with what this meant due to the American slang but then found out that this was a good thing and that she meant great and she would grant permission.

Product and Genre - LETHAL BIZZLE

The lethal bizzle album cover is similar to the Clubber's guide album cover, as they both appeal to the younger audience. The effect of the lights behind the artist also signifies disco lights which would reflect the young clubbing scene. The album cover is very bold with the name of the aritst - LETHAL BIZZLE, in bright, glowing lights which demonstrates to the audience that the music will be upbeat, these lights and the image of the artist himself clearly demonstarte the music genre.

Product and Genre - Kasabian

The genre of the band is established by the mise-en-scene such as the costumes/clothing worn by the artists themselves. The individual clothing and shabby chin length hair show that the genre of the band is indie/rock.
The overall music itself is targeted at those who enjoy listening to the indie and rock genre and maybe those who are inspired by dress sense alike the band members. Kasabian are an english band and the colours such as the red, white and navy could help establish this as they also represent the colours of the British flag.

Product and Genre - SEAL

This album cover is different to the Clubber's guide CD cover, this is due to the genre established - the music is soul music. The album cover relates to a jazz scene, the mise-en-scene such as the microphone within the shot is old therefore targeted at an older audience. The clothing of the artist is smart, a lose tie which resembles an older artist such as Frank Sinatra. The album cover is plain with dull colours - grey and soft shadows which relates to the music as it is southing music and the artists facial expressions indicate that the music lyrics are expressive.
